Contact lenses are the ideal alternative to wearing spectacles. They are made from a variety of sophisticated materials and can correct virtually any optical defect of the eye. Unlikely spectacles, contact lenses do not distort the way your eyes look or leave unsightly grooves on the face or fog-up with sudden temperature changes or break. They do not slide down your nose and are ideal for sports.

Contact lenses, like eyeglasses or LASIK, can correct your near sightedness,far sightedness and astigmatism.

They must be prescribed and properly fitted by an Optometrist. Low Vision Aids

This department deals with the rehabilitation of patients with low vision (distance vision < 6/18/ near vision < N12/ field of vision < 30 degrees) that cannot be further helped by medical/surgical means. We have a variety of devices to choose from. The exact device chosen depends on the patient’s needs and abilities. For distance vision we have the Ocutech VES and Telescopes.

For near a variety of optical magnifiers are available e.g the dome magnifier, half eyes, stand magnifiers. Pocket magnifiers are also available and a number of these devices are self illuminated. For patients with very poor vision, we also have the video magnifiers and CCTV. Our optometrists also train the patients in the use of a number of non-optical aids like the notex, typoscope etc and guide them with the use of computer software like JAWS and NVDA.

Department of Vision rehabilitation

This department is affiliated to the pediatric ophthalmology department and deals primarily with children having developmental delay, cerebral palsy and retinal dystrophies. Often these children have poor cognitive capabilities and may not be able to use the low vision devices in common use. They need assessment of functional vision, assessment and physiotherapy for multiple disabilities. The vision rehabilitation department in Jyothi Eyecare Center has been operational since 2014 and caters to these children. Interventions include simple home based exercises, multi specialty coordination, and environmental modifications in home and school to enable these children to perform better.
